First collected edition, limited to 750 sets, this # 749, numbered & initialed ("G.C.L.D.") by hand.. Complete in 16 Volumes. Tall 8vos, variously paginated, the title pages printed in blue & black. Publisher's original blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spines & decorated in blind. Top edges gilt, the others uncut. BAL 13680 (for the set) & 13682 (for "pieces here first located in book form"). Brief wear at spine extremities (including slight fraying & a few shallow nicks) affecting nine volumes, spines lightly faded on six volumes, two pages browned in volume 12 from previously inserted publisher's notice, slight occasional foxing mostly at early & late leaves, Very Good or better.
Published over a three year span, complete sets of Melville's Works remain uncommon. Volume 12, "The Confidence Man," additionally contains a bibliography of the first editions of the prose works by Michael Sadleir. As noted by Blanck,volume 13, with its own limitation page, includes the first printing of "Billy Budd," Other first appearances include "The Cincinnati," " Jack Gentian," & nine others.
